In the last couple of years I have been fortunate enough to be invited to cover more and more Jewish wedding ceremony’s. I have to say, if you are a wedding photographer, you havent reached your full potential until you have been thrown into the middle of the amazing, hectic, and sometimes unpredictable world of a Jewish wedding. Yvonne and Boruch’s wedding blew the cobwebs out for me in a big way… Their day was out of control in all the right ways. One of my favorite celebrations of all time.

A TRIBUTE TO 2012

So I am a little late to the party in celebrating 2012, the year that was. 2012 was one of the craziest years of my life, I got to do what I love to do all over the world thanks to my amazing clients and fellow photographers that had faith in me. 3 and a half years ago I was in my 9th year (and second month) of a desk job that I was starting to enjoy less and less. That day, I had an “office space” type conversation with a coffee mug holding superior that ended up being just the push I needed to take the leap and take a chance with my photography full time.

2013 will have me travelling our planet even more than last year, spending time with couples/friends doing what I love to (searching for free wifi). To my clients that have allowed me to be me, thank you thank you thank you. None of this would be at all if it weren’t for you. To all the amazing photographers and new friends I have made in 2012 (especially the Art and the Heart alumni) thank you for inviting me into your life.

Three and a half years later I am now more certain than I have ever been about anything that I made the right decision in taking that deep (nervous) breath as I walked out the office door.

A MORNING WITH THE POBKE’S

I don’t normally photograph families but if you are good friends with Christine Pobke (ridiculous family photographer) and she tells you to photograph her family, well… with trembling knee’s, you obey. It all began at 6:30 am on a Saturday morning in canberra, starting off at an abandoned cricket pitch, finishing off a few hours later in the backyard of the Pobke’s family home. MATTHEW & AUDREY KEEP EACH OTHER WARM IN THE YARRA VALLEY {VIC}

I shot Matthew and Audrey’s wedding on the 28th of May 2011 in the Yarra Valley in Melbourne. It was the last wedding of an incredibly busy season and my last “portrait” of that season. There is allot in this image for me personally, it was cold, we were tired and these two didn’t notice anything outside of each other (except for maybe the idling 4wheel drive truck parked behind them with its light setting to “high beam”)

TARA & PAUL {MARRIED} AT ALDER MANOR, NEW YORK

Well, where do I begin… Almost a year ago today I received an email from the (then) excited bride to be Tara… She told me that my work moved her and asked me if I would consider shooting her wedding at an abandoned Mansion (Alder Manor) in New York. I took about zero seconds to decide, hell yes! I asked Tara if she new I was based in Australia and to that she replied, ‘Yes. Is this going to be a problem?’. From that moment on it was true love . So I brought along my amazingly talented good friend, Samm Blake to help me document this day. It was the hectic and amazing wedding that I always imagined it would be. It looked a little like the images below. Tara, Paul… I love you guys! Thank you for taking a chance on some little (ripped) Australian guy from the other side of the world. You are officially on the besties list in my address book.

Tara and Pauls wedding is also being featured on 100 Layer Cake today.

Alex & Ben get amongst some Double exposure action

This Saturday gone Alex and Ben locked it in. I came along for the ride and they allowed me to experiment a bit through the location shoot with my Fuji XPro1. Below was the result of about 10 mins of double exposing fun. Alex and Ben, thanks for letting me be me. Happy Honeymoon!

MARISSA & ALEX WALK ON A MOUNTAIN FOR {ART &THE HEART}

So i have just returned from a week in the southern highlands at The Seidler House after holding Art and the Heart {Southern Highlands} workshop with my good friend Samm. I had the pleasure of meeting some amazing new friends and I will post in much more details about the experience in the next couple of weeks. Two of the above mentioned amazing people feature below, Marissa and Alex. They volunteered their time to come up into the mountains and model for the live shoot. Here are just a few of my images from the shoot for now, much more to follow soon.

In February this year I exhibited a new body of fine art work in Melbourne at the gallery I am currently represented by, Catherine Asquith Gallery. I wanted to then bring the show back home to canberra, back to the gallery that gave me my start in the fine art photography world, Photoacces {Huw Davies Gallery}.

So last month, I did. The opening night was amazing, it was so good to see so many familiar (and some unfamiliar) faces and it was nice to see that not a drop of wine went to waste. Below are some of the images that were on display. The first set of 11 images were all shot on film and are displayed at a minimum size of 120mm on the longest side (editions of 5). The second set of square images were shot on my travels (all but one shot digitally). I want to take this opportunity to thank the models in my images, all those that made it along to the exhibition (in both melbourne and canberra) and I would like to give a huge shout to to Jocelyn Rosen who was generous enough to open my show with some beautiful words.

To anyone out there that is sitting on a collection of personal work, you should get it up onto a wall as soon as you can. It’s really quite liberating.
